South Africa’s first dedicated fleet charging network hits 18,884 sessions in Gauteng

WattSpot, a dedicated battery-electric vehicle charging network for commercial fleets, recorded 18,884 charging sessions across its 3 Gauteng sites in its first 3 months of operation. The joint venture between Aeversa and Valternative Energy confirmed plans to install more than 200 charge points across South Africa by 2027.

For fleet operators weighing battery-electric vehicles, reliable charging uptime, coverage on high-traffic routes, and lower running costs per kilometre determine whether a pilot is viable.

South Africa’s public charging network does not yet meet the reliability that commercial fleets require. Availability is unpredictable, on-site support is limited, and a vehicle that cannot charge cannot earn. Aeversa and Valternative Energy formed WattSpot to close that gap: a dedicated network where fleet vehicles get guaranteed uptime and direct technical support.

Aeversa brings commercial charging experience from large deployments for Takealot, DHL, DP World, and Adcock Ingram amongst others. Valternative Energy runs the exclusive Uber Go Electric category and has built one of South Africa’s largest electric vehicle fleets. WattSpot puts Aeversa’s charging capability together with Valternative’s fleet data and expertise. Real-world driver behaviour determines where chargers go and how they need to perform.

Fleet drivers book a charging slot through a dedicated app before they arrive, and the app handles payment at the point of charge. If a charger faults, drivers reach Aeversa’s technical team through a WhatsApp support channel. Aeversa monitors every charger in real time and dispatches technicians or hardware replacements when needed. Network uptime has held above 98.5% since operations began in late 2025.

“Switching to an electric vehicle has changed everything for me. I no longer worry about petrol prices going up every week, and my running costs are actually lower. I’m able to take home more money consistently, and the experience of driving an electric car is smoother and I service it less.”

— Valternative EV4 driver, Johannesburg

Uber’s ride-hailing fleet in Johannesburg is the first large-scale deployment on the network. Valternative Energy supplies the vehicles through its EV4 programme, which has scaled to 240 vehicles since its November 2025 launch across WattSpot’s Wynberg, Northgate, and Fourways sites. Between December 2025 and February 2026, the 3 sites dispensed 205,845 kWh across 18,884 sessions, and the electric fleet has now covered more than 2 million kilometres. That data is now shaping where the next WattSpot sites go, so that charging infrastructure is already in place when more fleets are ready to move.

WattSpot’s Gauteng sites run 60kW DC fast chargers, though the current fleet vehicles draw a maximum of 20kW per session. Stations see consistent traffic for 12 to 14 hours a day across 3 signed property partner locations, with 2 additional sites in installation phase.

“The partnership between Valternative and WattSpot marks a critical milestone in scaling electric fleet operations across South Africa. As we expand the Uber Go Electric category, the need for reliable, accessible charging infrastructure becomes essential. WattSpot enables us to significantly reduce vehicle downtime, improve driver earnings, and deliver a seamless, high-performance experience for our fleet.

Together, we are building the backbone of electric mobility infrastructure in Gauteng and in the Western Cape by Q3, with a long-term vision to scale this model nationally and across Africa. This is not just about charging, it’s about enabling a fully integrated, efficient, and sustainable transport ecosystem.”

— Shahil Maharaj, Co-Founder & Operations Director, Valternative Energy

The expansion pipeline targets more than 200 charge points at high-traffic fleet locations nationally, with Durban next in line as infrastructure is sized for an incoming fleet of 66 vehicles. The pace of rollout reflects commercial demand, not speculation: fleet operators are moving to electric because the operating cost case is already proven.

“The whole goal of WattSpot is to stabilise the most unpredictable variable in fleet operations: whether a vehicle can charge when it needs to. 18,884 sessions across 3 sites gave us the route data to know exactly where the next chargers need to go. We are not guessing at expansion. The data builds the roadmap.”
— Reando Potgieter, COO, Aeversa

WattSpot plans to add solar PV and battery storage to amplify efficiency and sustainability for each site.

The WattSpot network has now supported 2 million kilometres of commercial driving across Gauteng with no service disruption. For fleet operators still waiting for the infrastructure to be ready, the rollout is underway.
