JMC calls on workers to commemorate Workers’ Day 2026 in honour of contributions of junior mine workers

The Junior Mining Council (JMC), on Friday, 1 May 2026, joined the nation in observing Workers’ Day in honour of the contributions of junior mine workers across South Africa.

JMC President Fred Arendse says: “On this day, the JMC also reflected on the tragedies that have shaped mining communities and strengthened the call for safer working conditions. From the recent tragedy of Ikapa Mine in Kimberley — a symbol of both pride and pain — to the Lily Mine tragedy, where families continue to seek closure,
these moments serve as a sobering reminder that worker safety is a fundamental human right”.

Workers’ Day in South Africa commemorates the labour movement, workers’ rights, and the ongoing pursuit of social justice. It is a day often marked by marches and rallies nationwide, reflecting both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.

While the sector continues to honour its workforce, it must also confront the structural challenges facing junior mining such as lack of capacity and capital. Regulatory certainty remains a key concern, with the industry requiring a stable, transparent and predictable policy environment to unlock early-stage investment.

Ongoing administrative constraints within the mineral rights system continue to affect project timelines, increase costs and erode investor confidence, with junior miners particularly vulnerable to delays in applications, appeals and approvals. The JMC remains actively engaged in legislative reform processes, contributing to consultations
and submissions on proposed amendments to mining legislation and related regulatory instruments.

“Beyond policy challenges, junior miners continue to face systemic constraints, including energy insecurity and logistics bottlenecks across rail and ports. These challenges disproportionately affect smaller operators, who often lack the balance sheet capacity to absorb inefficiencies,” says Arendse.

The JMC will continue engaging with government, regulators, investors and industry partners to ensure that junior mining is recognised as a critical driver of economic growth, job creation, industrial development and long-term sustainability.
Mining labour in South Africa, both direct and indirect, carries a quiet strength that often goes unseen, yet it remains the backbone of the nation’s industrial progress.

From deep underground shafts to open-cast operations, mineworkers demonstrate resilience, skill and an unshakeable sense of duty, helping to power the economy and support countless families and communities. Their work is not just about extracting minerals, it is about sustaining livelihoods, building futures and contributing to a legacy
that has shaped the country’s development for generations.

“The JMC acknowledges the significant gains made by labour in South Africa’s mining industry, recognising the role of organised workers in advancing safer working conditions, fair wages and greater dignity in the workplace. It affirms its commitment to supporting continued progress that balances industry growth with the well-being of
those who power it,” says Arendse.
