Supply Chain

Supply chain refers to the network of organisations, people, activities, information and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. The concept encompasses the entire flow of goods, data and finances, from the sourcing of raw materials through manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and delivery to the end user. A typical supply chain includes suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, logistics providers and customers, all coordinated to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery. Key components include procurement, production planning, inventory management, warehousing, transportation and demand forecasting. In the African context, supply chains often contend with infrastructure challenges, regulatory complexity, cross-border trade barriers and varying levels of technological adoption. Effective supply chain management seeks to optimise efficiency, reduce costs, minimise waste and improve service levels. The discipline has evolved to incorporate concepts such as just-in-time delivery, lean manufacturing, supply chain visibility and risk management. Packaging, road freight and logistics are critical enablers of supply chain performance, ensuring that products reach their destinations in good condition and on schedule. The rise of digital technologies, including data analytics, blockchain and automation, is transforming supply chain operations across the continent.
