MOON MISSION: The Artemis II mission marked humanity’s first return to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen also set the record for the furthest distance that humans have travelled from Earth: 252 756 miles, or more than 406771 km. This photo taken on April 6 shows a fully illuminated view of the Moon. The near side (identifiable by the dark splotches) is visible on the right of the photo. The left portion of the image shows the far side, the hemisphere not visible from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it orbits around the Earth. Photograph: NASA

NEW CHAPTER: The nearly 20-year Gautrain concession agreement with the Bombela Concession Company officially ended last month. However, the Gauteng government said the public-private partnership model would continue and that there would be a seamless transition to a new operator. The Bombela Operating Company will continue to manage the Gautrain under a contractual holdover arrangement for up to six months while final negotiations with a preferred bidder are concluded. The new concessionaire will operate, maintain, refurbish, upgrade, and modernise the Gautrain system for the next 15 years.

The facility has been built by Envusa Energy, a venture jointly owned by Anglo American and EDF power solutions. The electricity is being wheeled through the national grid under contracts with Valterra Platinum, De Beers and Kumba Iron Ore. Mooi Plaats is the first of three Envusa projects to enter into commercial operations, with two 140 MW projects to follow this year.

BURNING TOPIC: While the full details were unavailable at the time of going to print, Eskom had confirmed a 62c/kWh offer to two ferrochrome producers in a bid to salvage smelter demand that was on the edge of closure. Whether the rest of society and the regulator will approve of the discount remains to be seen. If it is approved, Eskom has promised to make available a standard offer to other smelters, such as Transalloys, whose Mpumalanga operations are pictured here.

CRITICAL DIVERSIFICATION: Exxaro Resources, which is best known for coal mining, has joined the International Manganese Institute, signalling its diversification into the critical mineral. The move followed Exxaro’s recent signing of binding agreements to acquire shares and claims in manganese assets held by Ntsimbintle Holdings and OM Holdings for R11.67-billion. The transaction will give Exxaro exposure to four operating mines, including 60.1% effective ownership in the Tshipi Borwa openpit manganese mine (pictured), in the Northern Cape.

HOPEFUL NOTE: The seasonally adjusted Absa Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose by 8.2 points to 48.7 in January, marking a significant recovery from December’s slump. Although still below the neutral 50-point mark, the size of the improvement is notable, with Absa saying the January results suggest that 2026 has started on a more hopeful note. COOL RECEPTION: US President Donald Trump has been unable to keep his story straight as to why America should be allowed to acquire Greenland. Is it for security reasons? Is it for the vast territory’s untapped critical minerals? Is he acting on a grievance related to not being awarded the 2025 Peace Prize? Or is he seeking to distract from political pressures at home? Whatever the real reason, Trump’s aggressive posture has received a reception from key allies that is cooler than a winter’s day on the Arctic island. Photograph: Bloomberg

GLISTERING START: The gold price has already set new records in 2026, having reached a record high of $4 549.71/oz on December 26, and having ended 2025 with a gain of 64% – its best annual performance since 1979. Global developments are suggestive of continued strength, with Morgan Stanley forecasting gold to hit $4 800/oz by the fourth quarter. This on the back of falling interest rates, a change in leadership at the Federal Reserve, and buying by central banks and funds.

BURNING ISSUE: As with efforts to salvage the integrated Newcastle steel mill, policy and electricity-tariff interventions aimed at sustaining and reviving the country’s ferrochrome smelters are also facing headwinds. It is widely accepted that the 900%-plus increase in electricity tariffs since 2008 is the reason why many smelters are uncompetitive and unprofitable. However, a subsidy in this area will have serious price consequences for other electricity users, including industrial firms facing similar competitiveness pressures.

ON TRAXX: It’s been a difficult journey, but Transnet last month celebrated a fleet-renewal milestone when the 200th Traxx 23E locomotive rolled off the assembly line. The locomotive is part of 240 such units that Transnet has procured as part of its troubled rail modernisation programme. Following a 2023 settlement agreement with project partner Alstom (which acquired original contractor Bombardier), Transnet Engineering initiated a 24/5 shift pattern to ramp up production. The project achieved its best-ever performance in 2024, delivering 43 locomotives in a single year and is now said to be on track for completing the delivery of the remaining 40 locomotives by June 2026.

ICONIC COLLECTABLE: The Royal Mint in the UK has released a collectable coin series celebrating music icon Freddie Mercury. The design portrays Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar in 1946, at the height of his powers as the flamboyant frontman of Queen. Besides his signature, the coin depicts Mercury’s four-octave vocal range with a musical stave that spans from bass to treble notes. The studded armband edge draws inspiration from his iconic Live Aid performance outfit, with the release coinciding with the fortieth anniversary of Queen’s show-stealing performance at Live Aid in July 1985.

INEQUALITY CRISIS: Despite geopolitical resistance, President Cyril Ramaphosa has sought to use South Africa’s G20 presidency to place the threat posed by inequality on to the global agenda. A taskforce established by Ramaphosa, and led by Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, has called for the creation of an international panel to tackle inequality, warning that extreme wealth disparities disrupt democracy and cause economic instability. “The world understands that we have a climate emergency; it’s time we recognise that we face an inequality emergency too,” Stiglitz asserts.

FINALLY COMPLETED: Unit 6 at Kusile power station officially entered into commercial operation on September 29, marking the end of Eskom’s multi-decade build programme – one which experienced well-publicised delays, major cost overruns, and technical problems, alongside allegations of serious corruption. Construction, which started in August 2008, was initially expected to take six years, but took 17 years instead. Likewise, the project’s initial budget of less than R80-billion ballooned to above R233-billion.

POWER STRUGGLE: No amount of tweaking chrome ore prices or imposing export restrictions will change the fact that uncompetitive power costs have crippled the sector, ChromeSA has said in response to a government proposal to impose export restrictions on ore in a bid to shore up the embattled ferrochrome industry. The industry body argues that, unless electricity pricing is addressed, local smelters will remain unviable.

GOLD & EMISSIONS: A new Metals Focus report states that the combined scope 1 and 2 greenhouse-gas emissions from the world’s largest gold producers fell below 30-million tonnes last year for the first time since 2014. This, owing to asset divestments, renewable-energy projects and new grid connections. However, lower gold output also meant that the average emissions intensity increased for the third straight year.

GOLDEN CATALYST: DRDGOLD CEO Niël Pretorius says the self-generation of solar electricity at Ergo (pictured here with the solar farm in the background) has served as a key life-extension catalyst for the East Rand operation. The 60 MW solar farm and associated battery storage system has reduced the risk previously posed by electricity. Together with the higher gold price, this lowering of risk has unlocked a plan to extend Ergo’s life to beyond 2040 and process a resource previously thought non-viable.
