MMD, Magna showcase high-capacity, digitalised mobile crushing solutions

Mineral processing solutions company MMD Group and global manufacturer Terex Corporation’s Magna range has showcased a strategic drive towards high-capacity mobile crushing solutions, faster mine deployment, hybrid and electrified processing technologies, digitalised equipment management and enhanced aftermarket support during an open day, held in Kempton Park, Gauteng, on May 14.
This event marked the formal introduction of the Magna range into the South African market through a partnership between MMD and Terex.
MMD Africa business development manager Mark Peeters pointed out that the partnership between MMD and Terex was fairly new, as agreements were only concluded late in 2025.
While Terex already has an established footprint in South Africa, its Magna range is a relatively new addition to its current portfolio.
The open day was designed to showcase Magna mining products to the South African market and demonstrate the scale and capability of the new equipment range, which includes high-capacity mobile crushing and screening solutions, primarily for use in large-scale mining, quarrying and construction operations.
Peeters highlighted the synergy between Magna and MMD’s existing business model.
MMD is traditionally associated with large-scale fixed plant crushing operations and high-capacity projects, and Magna’s mobile equipment offering allows MMD to extend that capability into the mobile crushing segment at a much larger production scale than traditionally available in the market.
He added that there was a need for the mining services and equipment market to rethink the role of mobile crushing equipment as, traditionally, mobile crushers of 200 t/h to 600 t/h were available to the market.
Magna aimed to move beyond that benchmark by targeting production capacities of 1 000 t/h or more. Peeters noted that this could create opportunities for mining companies to begin production faster than with fixed-plant infrastructure, generate revenue earlier in a project lifecycle, scale operations more efficiently with fewer machines and reduce capital deployment timelines.
This modularity and mobility is intended to help operators overcome the logistical bottlenecks often associated with deploying large crushing systems in remote mining environments.
Peeters also explained that the Magna range offered diesel, electric and hybrid operating configurations and, where grid power was available, operators could significantly reduce or eliminate diesel use and lower operating costs.
These hybrid systems aim to improve fuel efficiency by allowing diesel engines to operate more optimally while maintaining throughput performance.
“This aligns with broader mining industry trends toward lower emissions, improved energy efficiency and reduced operating expenditure,” Peeters said.
Terex Corporation business line director Neil McIIwaine explained that when Magna was created about two years ago, the company actively sought distribution partners globally that could provide strong sales, service and technical support.
Southern Africa was identified as a key growth market owing to its strong mining and quarrying sectors, and MMD was selected owing to its established reputation in crushing, screening, conveying technologies and long-standing relationships with mining customers across the region.
McIlwaine also outlined the strategy for Magna as focusing specifically on larger-scale users requiring equipment with capacities of 400 t/h and above and the equipment portfolio included large jaw crushers, cone crushers, impact crushers, heavy-duty screening systems, trommels, wobbler feeders and high-capacity conveyors and stackers.
Moreover, he revealed that Magna had an extensive product development roadmap from 2027 to 2029, with several innovative technologies under development.
In this regard, research and development priorities include larger-capacity machines, electrification and lower emissions, fuel consumption reduction and digitisation and machine intelligence.
“A major focus is enabling equipment to provide real-time operational feedback that helps customers optimise maintenance schedules and improve asset management decisions,” McIIwaine said.
With customers currently demanding exceptional after-sales support from mining equipment suppliers, he said Magna was investing heavily in global dealer development, technical support infrastructure, customer responsiveness and service and parts support.
“The partnership between Terex and MMD positions Magna as a premium large-scale mobile processing solution for Southern Africa’s mining and quarrying industries, with a clear focus on productivity, operational flexibility and future-ready technologies,” McIIwaine said.
