Probe IMT, a leading provider of productivity and safety solutions for mining, has announced its partnership with Optix, a global expert in fleet safety and management. This collaboration brings innovative safety technologies to mining operations across Southern Africa, addressing critical challenges in fleet safety and operations through monitoring, coaching and behaviour management.

This partnership leverages Probe IMT’s in-depth mining knowledge and extensive support network to ensure seamless integration of Optix’s advanced safety systems. Gert Roselt, CEO of Probe IMT, highlights the impact of this collaboration: “Partnering with Optix strengthens our commitment to building safer, data-driven mining fleets. Together, we’re offering our clients proven technology that fosters continuous improvement and a culture of fleet safety.”

With the harsh conditions of Southern Africa’s mining industry—remote locations, demanding terrains, and long shifts—fleet safety remains a key concern, explains Roselt. Driver fatigue, distraction, and regulatory requirements under the Mine Health and Safety Act make robust safety and monitoring systems essential. Optix solutions have been implemented across mining sectors in Africa and Australia, addressing challenges like collisions, risky behaviors, and near-miss incidents.

The Optix suite of solutions prioritises proactive driver coaching and behaviour management to prevent accidents before they happen. Using advanced tools such as video event recorders, telematics, and AI-driven insights with predictive analytics, Optix enables fleet managers to identify and address risky behaviours.

The key to Optix’s approach is its emphasis on structured coaching, says Roselt. "Managers gain access to daily performance scores, targeted coaching workflows, and continuous monitoring, driving long-term improvements in driver behaviour. The result? Safer drivers, enhanced productivity, and a strong culture of safety."

Optix advanced tools for safety and performance

Optix’s solutions include the DriveCam programme from Lytx, which uses machine vision and artificial intelligence (MV+AI) to monitor and analyse thousands of driving events. It identifies risks such as mobile phone use, distraction, lack of seat belt usage, tailgating, and inattentiveness. These insights allow fleet managers to deliver precise coaching that addresses unsafe behaviours before they escalate, fostering a safety-first environment.

The DriveAlert+ system targets fatigue and distraction, two of the biggest hazards in mining fleets. It monitors drivers in real time for early signs of drowsiness or loss of focus, delivering multi-sensory in-cab alerts—visual, audible, and haptic (seat vibration). These alerts reduce high-risk behaviour by up to 80%, significantly lowering the risk of fatigue-related accidents during long or night shifts.

Mobileye’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) adds further safety with real-time collision prevention features. Forward collision warnings, departure alerts, pedestrian detection, and distance monitoring ensure drivers remain situationally aware, even in challenging mine environments or on public roads.

Transforming fleet safety with real-time insights

Through integrated technologies, Optix empowers mining companies with real-time visibility into driver behaviour, automated event reporting, live vehicle camera streaming, and seamless coaching workflows. This holistic approach reduces collision rates, improves driver performance, and streamlines compliance with safety regulations, enhancing operational uptime.

“Mining companies can expect measurable benefits through improved driver behaviour that results in safer and more efficient fleets,” adds Roselt. “By introducing Optix solutions to the region, we’re setting a new standard for proactive risk prevention and operational excellence in Southern Africa’s mining industry.”
