Yancoal-run Premier Coal mulls scaling back mining operations, warns of job cuts
Premier Coal, operated by Yancoal Australia, said on April 22 it was considering scaling back operations at its Western Australia coal mine, a move that could lead to job cuts soon, citing challenging conditions in the region's coal supply market.
Yancoal, one of Australia's largest coal exporters, manages Premier Coal's operation on behalf of its majority shareholder Yankuang Energy Group.
Premier Coal operates a major open-cut coal mine in Collie, Western Australia.
It said the proposed reduction in operations would lead to layoffs in the coming weeks, without providing further details.
The company added that initial moves would be focused on reducing its reliance on labour hire and contractors, and that it will continue to review its operational needs.
The Mining and Energy Union warned that the job cuts would be a "serious blow to Collie workers and the local community", while stressing the need to turn transition commitments into real jobs on the ground.
