RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian miner Vale's board has decided to remove boardmember Marcelo Gasparino da Silva for allegedly leaking confidential information from a June 19 meeting, the company said late on Wednesday.

Vale said the leak was confirmed after an investigation by an independent external law firm and that it constitutes misconduct under the company's policies.

The removal must be approved by shareholders at an upcoming shareholder meeting.

Gasparino, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, was also removed from two advisory committees on which he served.

Vale elected a new chairperson on Wednesday following weeks of governance tensions sparked by shareholder Previ's request for the removal of former chairman Daniel Stieler, who ultimately resigned.

Gasparino was defeated by Previ-backed Manuel Lino Oliveira in the chairperson election.

Gasparino also sits on the board of State-run oil giant Petrobras.
