USA Rare Earths subsidiary achieves first pour of pure yttrium
Nasdaq-listed USA Rare Earth’s UK-based subsidiary Less Common Metals has successfully poured its first commercial batch of 99% pure yttrium metal, placing it among a small group of non-Chinese producers of commercial-grade yttrium.
Yttrium is one of the seven rare earths that China placed under export licensing restrictions earlier in April despite being used for high-performance applications globally.
The metal is typically used for thermal barrier coatings on turbine blades, aerospace components, electronics, lasers and superconductors.
The first-pour milestone builds on USA Rare Earths’ first commercial magnet production line having gone live in Oklahoma in March, and advances the group’s broader mine-to-magnet strategy spanning the US, the UK and Europe.
“Combined with our planned yttrium extraction at the Round Top Mountain project, in Texas, and our oxide processing capabilities, this positions USA Rare Earth to serve the aerospace, defence, and advanced manufacturing customers who can no longer rely solely on Chinese supply,” says USA Rare Earth CEO Barbara Humpton.
It is planned that the Round Top project will start commercial production by late 2028.
The company intends to operate across the full value chain from mining, processing and separation to metal-making, alloy production and magnet manufacturing.
