Skouries mine, Greece
Name of the Mine
Skouries mine.
Location
Halkidiki peninsula, in Central Macedonia, northern Greece, about 100 km east of Thessaloniki and near the village of Megali Panagia.
Mine Owner/s
Canadian gold and base-metals miner Eldorado Gold Corporation owns the mine through its Greek subsidiary, Hellas Gold. Eldorado reports 100% ownership of Skouries.
Brief Description
The copper/gold porphyry mine in the Kassandra Mines complex combines conventional openpit and underground mining and is designed to produce a copper/gold concentrate.
Brief History
Nippon Mining and Placer Development first drilled the deposit in the 1960s, with Placer also completing limited underground development. The Hellenic Fertiliser Company drilled the deposit in the 1970s, followed by TVX Gold drilling in 1996 and 1997. European Goldfields acquired the property in 2004 and completed a prefeasibility study in 2006. Eldorado acquired Hellas Gold through its acquisition of European Goldfields in February 2012. Following permitting delays and a period of care and maintenance, a revised investment agreement was ratified in 2021. Construction subsequently resumed.
Eldorado Gold reported first copper/gold concentrate production on September 9, 2026, marking a transition from construction and commissioning to commercial production during the fourth quarter of 2026.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Copper and gold.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Not stated.
Geology/Mineralisation
Skouries is an Early Miocene copper/gold pencil-porphyry deposit centred on a small porphyry stock, less than 400 m in diameter, that intrudes schist and gneiss of the Palaeozoic Vertiskos Formation of the Serbo-Macedonian Massif. Mineralisation has been tested to more than 920 m below surface and remains open at depth. Copper/gold mineralisation occurs in stockwork veins, veinlets and disseminations associated with intense potassic alteration. Potassic alteration and copper mineralisation extend into the surrounding country rock.
Reserves
As at September 30, 2025, total proven and probable reserves were estimated at 148.001-million tonnes grading 0.77 g/t gold and 0.50% copper, containing 3.67-million ounces of gold and 741 000 t of copper. This comprised proven reserves of 72.54-million tonnes grading 0.85 g/t gold and 0.51% copper, and probable reserves of 75.47-million tonnes grading 0.69 g/t gold and 0.50% copper.
Resources
As at September 30, 2025, measured and indicated resources, inclusive of reserves, totalled 207.33-million tonnes grading 0.69 g/t gold and 0.48% copper, containing 4.61million ounces of gold and 989 000 t of copper. Inferred resources totalled 58.29-million tonnes grading 0.41 g/t gold and 0.40% copper, containing 770 000 oz of gold and 233 000 t of copper.
Type of Mine
Openpit and underground mine.
Mining Method
The openpit is mined using conventional drill, blast, load and haul methods with a truck-and-shovel fleet. Underground mining uses sublevel open stoping with paste backfill. Ore is accessed through twin declines, with underground production developed below the openpit.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Major infrastructure includes the openpit and underground workings; primary crushing and ore-conveying systems; a nominal eight-million-tonne-a-year processing plant incorporating semi-autogenous and ball milling, gravity gold recovery, flotation and concentrate filtration; concentrate storage and loadout facilities; a paste-backfill plant; an integrated extractive-waste and water-management facility; a filtered-tailings plant and dry-stack storage area; a water-treatment plant; substations and power distribution; workshops, stores, offices and other site services. A private 5G network, a surface control centre, remote underground equipment and autonomous mapping drones support digital mine operations.
Prospects
Exploration is focused on porphyry targets within the project area, including the Tsikara and Fisoka prospects.
