Gas monetisation and broader gas cooperation will become central to strengthening energy ties between Senegal and Nigeria, following a high-level working visit aimed at deepening collaboration across the oil and gas value chain, reports energy industry organisation the African Energy Chamber.

The chamber states that the March visit included Senegal’s Energy Minister Birame Soulèye Diop and representatives from national oil company Petrosen, who met with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Senator Heineken Lokpobiri and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company in Abuja.

The parties committed to strengthening cooperation in areas such as refining, policy development, gas monetisation and national oil company collaboration. The chamber adds that this cooperation forms part of broader efforts by both countries to expand their upstream and downstream markets.

African Energy Chamber executive chairman NJ Ayuk says collaboration between African countries can support investment and energy development.

For Senegal, engagement with Nigeria could support improvements in governance structures and licensing processes, which may strengthen its position for foreign investment as it scales production and regional trade.

Further, Senegal has made progress following the start of operations at the Sangomar oilfield and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in 2024 and 2025 respectively. It states that Sangomar production has stabilised at about 100 000 bbl/d, with 36.1-million barrels produced in 2025.

Additionally, from February 2025 to February 2026, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project exported 24 LNG cargoes, along with 1.6-million barrels of condensate.

He states that Senegal’s intention is to expand both projects while advancing offshore natural gas field the Yakaar-Teranga development. “The country is also pursuing onshore gas and oil opportunities, with Petrosen having launched a $100-million exploration campaign targeting underexplored onshore basins.”

Ayuk adds that Nigeria continues to expand its oil, gas and refining sectors, targeting production of about 2-million barrels a day while increasing investment across the value chain. He notes that a 2025 licensing round introduced 50 frontier and one deep-water block, targeting $10-billion in investment over the next decade.

Cooperation between Senegal and Nigeria aligns with efforts to strengthen regional energy markets and expand trade in crude, refined products and gas, while also reflecting a broader shift towards collaboration among African energy producers to support investment, infrastructure development and long-term energy security, Ayuk concludes.
