New Zealand-focused Santana has secured building slots with heavy equipment supplier Komatsu New Zealand for a full mining fleet at the Bendigo-Ophir gold project.

The fleet agreement, valued at about NZ$115-million, will supply core mobile equipment including PC3400 and PC2000 excavators, alongside a fleet of 140-t-class HD1500 haul trucks. Additional support equipment such as dozers, loaders and graders will also be provided as part of the package.

The Bendigo-Ophir gold project developers said the secured manufacturing slots ensure timely delivery of equipment for construction start, pending the outcome of the fast-track approval process scheduled for October 29.

Beyond equipment supply, Komatsu will provide a five-year on-site support partnership, including dedicated technical personnel, integrated maintenance and parts services, and advanced fleet management systems. The agreement also includes operator training and simulator programmes aimed at improving productivity and ensuring efficient ramp-up.

“Operating as an owner-miner removes the contractor margin typically embedded in mining costs, setting us up as a lower-cost operation,” said CEO Damian Spring.

He added that the project would also benefit from a residential workforce model, avoiding fly-in, fly-out costs, as well as grid-connected processing infrastructure to stabilise long-term operating expenses.
