SAGA’s Innovation & Investment Alley - Discover the frontier of geophysics
At a time when geophysics faces unprecedented demands from the global energy transition to the stewardship of natural resources, the Southern African Geophysical Association (SAGA) 2026 conference places a bold question at the centre of its theme: How do we equip future generations to thrive in a rapidly changing world? The answer, increasingly, lies in our collective ability to innovate, to collaborate, and to transform ideas into impacts.
This year, that spirit takes tangible form in a new feature at the SAGA conference: the Innovation & Investment Alley.
The Alley will take centre stage as a dynamic showcase of the breadth and depth of geophysics today. Designed as a meeting point between active exploration programs and emerging innovation, the Alley will bring together prospectors, explorers, miners, startups, research groups, and technology developers who are shaping the future of our discipline and pushing the boundaries of what it can achieve.
What will make the Alley space unique is its balance. Alongside pioneering research and breakthrough technologies, the Alley will highlight the real‑world exploration campaigns currently driving discovery across Africa and beyond. Participants will be able to display posters of their developments and have the opportunity to deliver concise five‑minute Speed Talks that range from on‑the‑ground field results to bold new concepts, from operational advances to transformative scientific insights.
This blend of practical experience and innovative thinking is intentional. The Alley is designed to spark collaboration between those pushing the boundaries of geophysical science and those applying it daily in exploration programs. It will also be a platform for commercialisation, connecting contributors directly with industry specialists, incubators, investors, and leaders across Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and Mining Equipment Technology and Services (METS).
By bringing these communities together, the Innovation & Investment Alley will be more than an exhibition space. It will become a catalyst: a place where ideas gain traction, where exploration challenges find new solutions, and where the next generation of geophysical progress takes shape.
The conference’s technical chair Laurent Ameglio, said: “From a technical standpoint, the Alley will probably be the most meaningful addition we’ve made to the conference. It is designed to create a direct line between emerging ideas and the people who can refine, test, and deploy them. To me, that’s the real value: giving future geoscientists a space where innovation isn’t just discussed but actively engineered.”
As we gather in Cape Town from October 13 to October 15, 2026, the SAGA 2026 Big Picture becomes clear: the future of geophysics will be shaped by those willing to experiment, collaborate, and imagine differently.
The Innovation & Investment Alley is a feature sponsored by EXIGE.
