Ramokgopa welcomes inauguration of Envusa's R15bn Koruson 2 cluster of renewables projects
Envusa Energy – a joint venture between diversified miner Anglo American and EDF Renewables – has inaugurated its flagship 520 MW Koruson 2 (K2) cluster of renewable energy projects in the Eastern Cape and bordering the Northern Cape.
Electricity and Energy Minister Kgotsientsho Ramokgopa told attendees at the official inauguration ceremony on April 24 that this reflected government's goal of growing private sector investment in the country.
He stressed the importance of the State enabling such investments and to facilitate competition in the interest of the country as a whole.
Also in attendance at the inauguration were senior representatives from Anglo American subsidiaries De Beers Group and Kumba Iron Ore, as well as from Valterra Platinum (previously Anglo American Platinum), alongside members of the Envusa board and leadership team, Eskom, traditional community leaders and partners from Anglo American and EDF power solutions.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul also attended the inauguration.
Representing an investment of approximately R15-billion, the K2 cluster comprises the 240 MW Mooi Plaats solar PV facility, the 140 MW Umsobomvu wind farm and the 140 MW Hartebeesthoek wind farm - delivering a combined 520 MW of clean energy capacity to support energy-intensive industries critical to South Africa’s economy.
As of April, 380 MW of the project is connected to the grid, with the remaining 140 MW scheduled to come online by June.
Envusa Energy chairperson Nolitha Fakude said the project stands as a defining example of how partnerships and collaboration can unlock meaningful, large-scale progress.
