Pioneer partners with Mineral Technologies on US tungsten project

ASX-listed Pioneer Minerals has entered into a strategic collaboration with Mineral Technologies USA to advance development of its Springfield critical minerals project in Idaho.

The companies have executed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding (MoU) to assess beneficiation pathways and processing solutions for tungsten and associated critical minerals at the project.

The Springfield project, part of Pioneer’s North Pine asset in Idaho, is being positioned as a potential contributor to US supply chains for defence, aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors.

The collaboration will focus on evaluating the production of commercial scheelite concentrate from primary ore and historic tailings, with testwork and engineering studies planned to assess modular, low-capital processing options.

Pioneer said the approach could support a staged development pathway, potentially reducing upfront capital requirements and shortening timelines to production.

The MoU also provides scope to assess beneficiation and recovery pathways for gallium mineralisation identified at the project, offering potential co-product upside.

Recent exploration results have highlighted the project’s broader critical minerals potential, with high-grade gallium, tungsten and gold mineralisation identified.

Rock chip sampling has returned gallium values of up to 128.7 parts per million (ppm), alongside multiple assays exceeding 60 ppm, while tungsten grades of up to 2.98% and gold assays of up to 7.75 g/t have also been reported.

The company said the results point to a multi-commodity system, comprising a scheelite-bearing tungsten skarn and a separate gold/silver vein system.

Preliminary metallurgical testwork on historic tailings has also delivered a 3.27% concentrate, representing a 17.6-times upgrade.

The development aligns with broader efforts to strengthen domestic supply of critical minerals in the US, where tungsten and gallium are considered strategically important for defence and high-tech applications.

Pioneer said the collaboration would support its engagement with potential US government funding programmes, including initiatives linked to defence supply chains.

“This agreement represents an important step in advancing a technically robust and capital-efficient development pathway for the Springfield prospect," commented CEO Michael Beven.

“Early engagement with Mineral Technologies provides Pioneer with access to established mineral processing expertise, supporting the company’s objective of progressing toward potential domestic tungsten concentrate production capability in the United States.

“The inclusion of work programmes to assess recovery pathways for coincident gallium mineralisation presents a potential opportunity to enhance the project’s overall value and supports exposure to multiple critical minerals of strategic importance.”

Pioneer will now advance metallurgical testing, flowsheet development and concept-level engineering studies, alongside evaluation of modular processing plant options.

At the same time, the company is progressing permitting and development activities, including submission of a notice of intent and plan of operations for Phase 1 drilling.

The MoU is non-binding and does not create commercial obligations, with any future agreements subject to further negotiation.
