NYSE- and TSX-listed Barrick Mining Corporation has welcomed the Ontario Court of Appeal’s dismissal of an appeal having been made by certain Tanzanian residents alleging human rights abuses by the Tanzanian Police Force in the vicinity of the North Mara gold mine.

Evidence filed during the case suggested that the Tanzanian Police Force acted independently of Barrick.

Barrick itself maintains a zero tolerance policy for human rights violations by employees, contractors or any third parties acting on its behalf, the company said in a statement issued on April 8.

The Ontario Court of Appeal’s decision upholds an earlier ruling by the Superior Court of Ontario which found that Ontario is not the appropriate forum to consider these claims – they must instead be adjudicated in Tanzania.

Barrick president and CEO Mark Hill affirms the company is proud of its work in Tanzania and works closely with all levels of government and host communities to ensure the mine creates jobs, drives economic development and improves the lives of many Tanzanians.
