NRF—SSHRC launch South Africa–Canada Universities networks joint funding call

In recognition of the growing importance of international research collaboration to address global challenges, the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) have announced joint funding to support research and innovation projects.
In a significant step to strengthen the partnership between the NRF and the SSHRC, this collaborative initiative is a direct outcome of the dynamic of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two parties in November 2025 during the South Africa–Canada Universities Network (SACUN) Workshop held at Carlton University in Ottawa, Canada.
The initiative introduces the SSHRC-NRF Seed Grants funding, through which researchers affiliated with eligible South African and Canadian postsecondary institutions will be supported. This initiative aims to support a maximum of eight projects and encourages collaborative proposals led by Principal Investigators from both nations. The initiative seeks to enhance university research collaboration in six prioritised themes: Just and Resilient Societies, Environmental Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence, Sustainable Growth and Mathematics Education.
Researchers have already been invited through a call to submit their proposals. Deputy CEO of the NRF, Dr Gugu Moche, stated, “This call for proposals not only signifies our commitment to fostering international collaboration but also aims to enhance research capacity and foster inclusive partnerships between our two nations. We believe that addressing global challenges requires united efforts and cross-border collaboration.”
Michael Nxumalo, Manager: International Grants and Partnerships at the NRF and Director of Future Earth Africa Hub, described the initiative as a valuable addition to the growing body of impactful efforts involving South Africa’s research community. “With the emergence of SACUN, we have laid a foundation for impactful research that addresses shared goals and challenges. We are excited to see the innovative projects that will arise from this collaborative funding opportunity.”
Key details of the SSHRC-NRF Seed Grants include:
- Project Duration: A minimum of 24 months and a maximum of 36 months, commencing in 2026.
- Call Schedule:
o Call for applications opens: 01 April 2026
o Application deadline: 28 May 2026
o Notification of funding decisions: 01 – 30 September 2026
Eligibility criteria include the requirement for applicants to hold a PhD and be affiliated with recognised institutions. Researchers are encouraged to submit their collaborative proposals through the NRF Connect system.
