Minerals Council attends memorial service for deceased Ekapa mineworkers
The Minerals Council South Africa joined Ekapa Minerals in commemorating the loss of five colleagues at a memorial service at the company’s mine in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, on April 17.
Minerals Council CEO Mzila Mthenjane was joined by other senior Minerals Council colleagues at the memorial service to honour the five people who died in an underground mud-rush incident on February 17.
“Each of these people had a family, friends and colleagues. Behind each of these deaths is a family and a community living with an overwhelming sense of sorrow and loss.
“It is for this reason, and for other fatalities in our sector, that the Minerals Council and its members are so committed to ensuring we do all we can to achieve zero harm.
“We believe this goal is possible and we are unwavering in our focus to achieve it,” said Mthenjane.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, to the employees at Ekapa Minerals and its management, and to the wider Kimberley community. May this memorial allow space for dignity, remembrance, and collective support,” he added.
The council said it attended the memorial service to demonstrate the sector’s solidarity with a member company at such a tragic time, underscoring the willingness of mining companies to come to the assistance of another at a time of crisis.
It adds that it recognises the tireless, selfless efforts by Mine Rescue Services to recover the bodies of the five miners.
