Mastermyne found guilty of industrial manslaughter over 2021 fatality
Australian contractor Mastermyne Group has been found guilty of industrial manslaughter following a fatal incident at the Crinum Operations mine in September 2021 that claimed the life of worker Graham Dawson.
The verdict follows a Resources Safety and Health Queensland investigation and subsequent prosecution by the Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor. Sentencing for the industrial manslaughter charge will be scheduled at a later date.
In a statement on Monday, Mastermyne acknowledged the outcome of the trial but made no further comment. The company noted that any potential financial liability arising from the proceedings may be mitigated through its insurance programme, and no penalties have been reflected in its financial statements owing to the contingent nature of the proceedings.
“Our sincere thoughts remain with Graham’s family, friends and workmates, each deeply affected by their tragic loss,” the company said.
Mastermyne emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of its workforce remained its core values. The company has invested in strengthening its safety culture across operations and reaffirmed its commitment to achieving the best possible safety outcomes in the future.
