JMC condemns the brutal murder of Attorney Chinette Gallichan and calls for swift justice
The Junior Mining Council (JMC) expresses its deepest shock and outrage at the brutal murder of attorney Chinette Gallichan in central Johannesburg in broad daylight on Monday. JMC calls on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure that justice is served without delay.
JMC extends its heartfelt condolences to her family, her colleagues at Sibanye-Stillwater, and her loved ones during this painful and traumatic time. The loss of a young legal professional in such a barbaric manner is not only devastating to those who knew her, but deeply disturbing for society and the mining sector at large.
This tragedy follows the assassination of attorney Bouwer van Niekerk in September 2025, signalling a deeply troubling pattern of violence against individuals who uphold justice and the rule of law.
While investigations are still underway, any suggestion that this heinous crime may be linked to labour-related matters or disputes within the mining sector is deeply concerning. The mining industry is governed by established legal frameworks, collective bargaining structures, and dispute resolution mechanisms that exist precisely to prevent conflict from descending into violence.
JMC strongly condemns this senseless and barbaric act. There can be no justification - political, economic, or otherwise - for murder.
South Africa cannot allow a culture of fear to take root in spaces where lawful engagement and democratic processes are meant to prevail.
JMC calls on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice. Accountability is essential, not only for the sake of the victim and her family, but to send a clear message that criminality and intimidation will not be tolerated in South Africa.
The safety of legal practitioners, mining professionals, workers, and all citizens must remain paramount.
