Innomotics: Combining 150 Years of Experience with a Startup Mindset
Although Innomotics is a young company, its technology and expertise are built on more than 150 years of industrial experience. The business became independent through a carve-out announced in 2022 and completed in 2024. Today, Innomotics combines the agility of a startup with the engineering depth, installed base and customer relationships of a long-established technology company.
In Africa, the company’s regional headquarters in Johannesburg support customers across sub-Saharan Africa, while a branch office in Zambia provides dedicated support to the copper industry. Innomotics’ technology has historically been deployed at many of Southern Africa’s oldest and most productive gold and platinum mines. As investment in copper accelerates across the continent, the company is increasingly focused on supporting this sector. Namibia is also attracting renewed interest, building on Innomotics’ long-standing presence in the country and its historical roots in Siemens’ German industrial heritage.
Innomotics’ offering is organised around three complementary divisions. The Low Voltage Motors division is one of the world’s largest suppliers of IEC-standard motors, covering efficiency classes from IE3 to the latest IE5 technology and beyond. The High Voltage Systems division provides a comprehensive portfolio of high-voltage motors and medium-voltage variable-speed drives (VSDs), supported by the engineering expertise required to integrate these products into complete electrical drivetrain solutions. This capability is particularly relevant to mining, where reliable, efficient and highly engineered systems are essential. The division also delivers grid-management technologies and automation systems for mining and other industrial applications.
The Life Cycle Services division provides field services, repairs, spare parts and logistics throughout the operating life of installed equipment. Its offering is also developing a stronger digital dimension, helping customers improve asset availability, maintenance planning and operational performance.
Electrification is central to the future of mining. As operations transition from fossil-fuel-based power towards more efficient electrical systems and greater use of renewable energy, they can reduce emissions while improving energy efficiency and supporting long-term economic sustainability. Electrification can also enable more precise equipment control and provide a foundation for further advances in automation and digital operations.
Innomotics differentiates itself by combining digital and automation capabilities with its motors and drives portfolio for demanding applications. Globally, the company demonstrated this approach at the Quellaveco copper mine in Peru, where a single digital-twin database supported the engineering and delivery of the mine’s automation system. By creating a shared digital representation of the plant, this approach helps connect engineering, commissioning and operations through consistent information.
Quality and local responsiveness are equally important. Innomotics motors and VSDs are manufactured to stringent standards at world-class facilities across North America, Europe and China. In Africa, the company has localised its geared-motor range through a modern assembly centre in Midrand, where products can be manufactured to order for the local market.
As Africa’s mining industry advances towards more connected, efficient and sustainable operations, Innomotics is helping lead the way. By integrating electrification, automation and digitalisation, the company is enabling mining businesses to improve performance, reduce environmental impact and build a more resilient future for the sector.
