Heat-sealable paper packaging range launched

SEAL THE DEAL The new set of heat-sealable solutions launched by Sappi are a fibre-based alternative to plastics
Having expanded its range of functional packaging papers in January, sustainable paper, pulp and packaging solutions provider Sappi has launched its full set of heat-sealable solutions designed for converters, printers and brand owners that want fibre-based alternatives to plastics.
The Seal family – Seal Silk, Seal G Silk, Seal Pure Silk, Seal Natural, Seal Light, and Seal Lucent – covers a broad mix of applications and sealing needs while supporting “smooth integration” into existing packaging lines.
With multiple finishes and features – including optical brightening agent- (OBA-) free and translucent options – the portfolio is designed to help customers select a grade that fits their pack format, process and visual requirements.
Many companies are facing pressure from new regulations, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, and changing customer expectations which is driving demand for recyclable packaging across global markets.
At the same time, companies still need stable sealing results.
Total cost of ownership also plays a role, as paper-based solutions must compete with plastic solutions to make any switch viable.
Sappi notes that the Seal portfolio was developed to address these needs, making it easier to move from plastic and composite structures to a mono-material paper solution.
Flexibility
Each seal grade supports different production setups, print methods, visual requirements and sealing strengths, allowing clients to choose a paper that matches their line, pack format or performance needs.
Sappi notes that the Seal Silk and Seal G Silk are available in weights ranging from 50 gsm to 110 gsm, offer low-to-medium water vapour performance and work with flexo and gravure printing.
Seal Pure Silk, available in 67 gsm, is OBA-free for clients that prefer a “natural look” , while Seal Natural, available in 95 gsm, provides strong sealing strength and hot-tack performance.
Seal Light Gloss and Seal Light Natural come in 54 gsm and 44 gsm respectively and support flexo and gravure printing, with Seal Light Natural being OBA-free and a lightweight option.
Seal Lucent is available for applications that benefit from translucency.
“We are seeing brand owners, converters and printers look for reliable ways to change their packaging without adding risk or cost,” says Sappi flexible packaging sales director Michael Bethge.
He notes that clients need practical choices rather than one fixed solution, along with technical support during this transition.
“The Seal range reflects that feedback and gives customers a broad set of options.”
Reliable Performance
All Seal papers are designed for consistent sealing and runnability, while their mechanical strength supports stable processing and safe transport. The papers also give accurate print results, helping brands reach a clear and defined visual appearance on the shelf, Sappi states.
The company concludes that, with its scale in speciality papers and its technical support, clients gain a stable and efficient path toward recyclable mono-material packaging.
