GOLDEN PEACE

23rd October 2026

South Africa is a country of contradictions. On the day that Navi Pillay was named as the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner, her home city of Durban was being rocked by anti-immigrant violence. South Africa’s other four recipients – Albert Luthuli, Desmond Tutu, FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela – also walked this country’s fine line between peace and violence. This contradiction notwithstanding, South Africa should still celebrate the fact that Pillay and her fellow laureates are true symbols of peace in a fractured world.
