Leading mining exhibition Electra Mining Africa (EMA) 2026 has named South African National Parks (SANParks) Honorary Rangers K9 Project Watchdog as its official charity partner, providing a platform to raise awareness and support for one of South Africa's most effective anti-poaching initiatives.

The partnership was announced during the exhibition's exhibitor briefing at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, at Nasrec, on June 9, where representatives from the SANParks Honorary Rangers K9 Project Watchdog and the Kruger National Park K9 unit highlighted the critical role that highly trained dogs play in protecting the country's wildlife.

SANParks Honorary Rangers K9 Project Watchdog chairperson Moira Shein said the partnership with EMA would help the donor-funded initiative expand awareness of the work being done by conservation K9 units across South Africa's national parks.

"We're really, really grateful to be partnering with Electra Mining Africa, it's very exciting for us," said Shein.

The K9 Project forms part of the SANParks Honorary Rangers organisation and provides support to South African National Parks' K9 units through fundraising, procurement and infrastructure development.

"It is completely donor funded, and we need the awareness. We need people to understand what these dogs are doing and how important they are in the conservation of our wildlife for future generations," she said.

Unlike many charitable programmes, K9 Project Watchdog does not simply provide funding. Instead, it procures equipment and resources directly on behalf of the national parks' K9 units.

"K9 Project Watchdog will procure the dogs, they'll procure all the equipment they need, we build the kennels, and we are a support system to SANParks in their K9 units," Shein explained.

The project also funds the acquisition and training of dogs and handlers, a process that requires significant investment and commitment.

According to Shein, the dogs undergo about 18 months of training through dog handling training provider Genesis K9 Group before becoming operational, while handlers complete a structured training programme to qualify as professional K9 handlers.

"The bond between the ranger (the dog handler) and the dog is critical, and it's a very unforgiving environment in which these dogs work," she said. "They've been absolute game changers in the fight against poaching."

Transforming Anti-Poaching Operations

Kruger National Park K9 manager Sam Madalane provided insight into just how significant that impact has been.

"The work they do, it's beautiful, it's unbelievable," he said.

According to Madalane, before the introduction of specialised tracking dogs, ranger teams relied primarily on visual tracking techniques to pursue poachers across the vast Kruger National Park.

"When we look back, where it was just rangers using their eyes to visually track and compare it to after us introducing the dogs, you cannot compare it," he said.

Covering more than two-million hectares, an area roughly comparable in size to Israel, Kruger presents enormous challenges for law-enforcement and anti-poaching teams.

Madalane explained that ranger teams initially achieved an arrest rate of only about 5% when relying solely on visual tracking methods. The introduction of the first trained Belgian Malinois dogs increased that figure to approximately 35%.

The results improved even further with the introduction of Bloodhounds trained to follow older scent trails and, subsequently, Doberman-Bloodhound crossbreeds.

"After we crossbred with the Doberman, the Bloodhound-cross-Doberman, then our number went up to 95%," he said.

Madalane recounted one case in which a single dog tracked a group of suspects over a distance of 145 km during a three-day pursuit.

"We have tracked one team from the start until the end, 145 km in three days, just following one team with one dog," he said.

The contribution these dogs have made to conservation efforts cannot be overstated, he added.

"They've saved a lot of animals. Without the dogs, I don't think rhinos would still be around the park."

More Than Tracking Dogs

While many people associate anti-poaching K9 units with tracking, Madalane noted that the dogs perform a wide range of specialised functions.

The animals are trained in scent discrimination, enabling them to focus exclusively on human scent while ignoring wildlife and environmental distractions.

The programme has also introduced detection dogs capable of identifying a variety of wildlife contraband and illegal materials.

"That can be lion bones that are set to leave the gate, elephant tusk, rhino horn, leopard skin, pangolin scales, and also explosives, but mainly focusing on ammunition and firearms," he explained.

Detection dogs are currently deployed at eight official gates within the Kruger National Park, while specialised K9 teams operate as part of the park's Special Operations units.

These dogs are trained for multiple roles, including detection, tracking and suspect apprehension.

"They are doing detection, apprehension, tracking day and night," said Madalane.

Meeting the K9 Teams

Visitors attending EMA 2026 will have the opportunity to meet some of the dogs and handlers responsible for this work.

"They can expect a lot of excitement and also learn a lot about what these dogs actually do and how they work," said Shein.

Among the dogs expected to feature are the specialised Doberman-Bloodhound crossbreeds used to track human scent trails across vast wilderness areas.

"It's actually amazing what these dogs do," she said.

The charity will also have merchandise available for sale, while visitors will be able to make donations directly to support the programme.

According to Madalane, supporters can also participate in exclusive conservation experiences that provide first-hand exposure to anti-poaching operations, including behind-the-scenes visits to operational facilities, interactions with Special Operations teams and opportunities to accompany tracking teams in the field.

"We are very reliant on donor funding, and without donor funding, I don't think the K9 unit operations would be here where it is today," he said.

For both Shein and Madalane, the message to visitors is simple: every contribution makes a difference.

"Any contribution that they contribute is making a huge difference," said Madalane. "Their contribution has a direct impact on the K9 unit and the K9 teams."

As Electra Mining Africa prepares for its 2026 edition, the partnership with K9 Project Watchdog offers exhibitors and visitors an opportunity not only to engage with the latest industrial and mining technologies, but also to support a conservation initiative that is helping protect South Africa's wildlife through one of the country's most successful anti-poaching programmes.
