How solar energy is supporting uninterrupted education with uninterrupted power
The Brighter Futures initiative, a pioneering partnership between leading solar provider, GoSolr, financial services leader Investec, and the Rising Tide Foundation, unveiled a solar power system at the Sekwati Primary School in Soweto on Friday, 20 March. This marks a significant step in a mission to equip the nation's public schools with sustainable energy, ensuring uninterrupted learning and channelling critical electricity bill cost savings of up to 50% back into education.
The joint venture was born from a shared vision to address two of the most pressing challenges facing South Africa's 22,000 public schools: severe funding constraints and an unreliable national power grid. By providing clean, consistent solar energy, Brighter Futures aims to deliver substantial financial relief and create a more stable and effective learning environment for millions of learners.
At its core, Brighter Futures is a story of partnership for impact. It demonstrates a commitment to bringing together diverse stakeholders from the corporate, financial, and non-profit sectors to foster meaningful and lasting change within communities. The initiative operates on the principle that by combining resources and expertise, it is possible to build a more resilient and equitable future for the next generation of leaders.
The system unveiled at Sekwati School comprises a 30kW inverter, 80 high-efficiency solar panels, and 40kWh of battery storage. Crucially, it will shield the school from the disruptive effects of power outages, ensuring that the lights stay on and that education can continue without interruption. The installation comes with a commitment to free servicing, maintenance, and component replacements, guaranteeing long-term sustainability and peace of mind for the school.
Patrick Narbel, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of GoSolr, commented on the milestone: "What we are installing here is more than just hardware; it is an investment in both environmental and social progress. Each solar panel and battery system provides the technical foundation for cost control and energy independence. More importantly, it empowers young learners with the uninterrupted education they deserve. By ensuring a stable learning environment, we are helping to cultivate the potential of future scientists, artists, and leaders who will one day drive our nation forward. This project is a clear demonstration that sustainable technology can deliver powerful social dividends."
The initiative projects cost savings of between 30% and 50% on monthly electricity bills. For a typical school, this equates to approximately R6,000 per month. A sum that could cover half the salary of a government school teacher or purchase essential educational tools like a new data projector for a classroom. These savings provide principals and educators with newfound flexibility, allowing them to redirect funds towards their most pressing wish lists, from critical learning materials to extracurricular support.
"Having solar helps eradicate the challenges we have in schools during loadshedding and load reduction. Life has also been made easier as kids enjoy coming to school, as learning and teaching happen without interruptions," says Sekwati Primary School Principal, Diale Pieter.
The unveiling at Sekwati School builds on the momentum of successful school installations to date and serves as a blueprint for a nationwide rollout. With the success of these projects, the Brighter Futures initiative is setting its sights on the ambitious goal of reaching thousands more schools across South Africa. The partnership is creating a scalable model that addresses immediate infrastructure needs and fosters a culture of sustainability and empowerment, ensuring a brighter, more secure future for all learners.
