Project Description
The underground mine comprises a twin vertical shaft system, a production shaft and a services shaft, which will also function as the second escape route, and a process plant. 

Planned mining operations include the extraction of the Merensky reef and upper group two (UG2) chromitite layer. The hoisting capacity of the main shaft is 250 000 t a month of reef and 15 000 t a month of waste.

Mining operations will be facilitated through semimechanised, or hybrid, methods using conventional stoping methods and mechanised methods for development and rock-handling operations.

Full production is estimated at 83 000 t a month.

Once the mine has reached full production, it is expected to have an estimated 3 190 employees.

Latest Developments
Wesizwe has adopted a new production strategy to enhance long-term value.

The company has decided to halt its previously adopted phased ramp-up approach, including a one-million-tonne-a-year production strategy, and will instead pursue a revised development strategy based on a single-stage ramp-up to a 3.5-million-tonne-a-year operation.

"Preliminary technical assessments indicate that this approach represents the most optimal development pathway," Wesizwe has said, adding that it will undertake a comprehensive optimisation study to confirm these findings and further refine the execution strategy.

During the current financial year, the company will prioritise the completion of the optimisation study alongside underground development activities to establish the infrastructure required to support the envisaged production ramp-up.
