ASX-listed Australian Rare Earths has successfully established rare earths recovery at its Koppamurra pilot plant, having advanced beyond heap leaching into downstream product recovery.

The company's first heap leach column cycle, which used about eight tonnes of ore, has demonstrated continuous recovery of rare earths into a pregnant leach solution (PLS).

The next phase of the demonstration plant entails processing the first 5 000-litre PLS batch through the mixed rare earth hydroxide precipitation circuit, with the resultant mixed rare earth hydroxide being an intermediate product that will be further refined into pilot samples of mixed rare earth oxide and shared with prospective offtake partners.

Australian Rare Earths is working to have its pilot campaign, which will continue to December this year, validate precipitation, thickening, filtration and washing circuits and generate operating and engineering data required to support definitive feasibility study design.

"The pilot programme is off to an excellent start. We have successfully established rare earths recovery through heap leaching and are now validating the first downstream processing stage required to convert those rare earth-bearing liquors into a saleable product. The start of mixed rare earth hydroxide precipitation marks another significant step in demonstrating Koppamurra's complete processing flowsheet at pilot scale," says Australian Rare Earths MD and CEO Travis Beinke.
