AMCU demands accountability after Implats fatality
The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) has, in a media statement, reacted with “anger and outrage” to the death of an employee at platinum group metals (PGMs) miner Impala Platinum’s (Implats’) South Shaft, in Rustenburg.
The union has reported that the employee reportedly succumbed to his injuries after an underground locomotive collision.
The union describes rail-bound equipment as one of the most dangerous operational environments in underground mining, adding that repeated incidents across the sector points to persistent weaknesses in signalling systems, communication protocols, braking mechanisms and traffic separation controls.
AMCU says it will seek urgent clarity from Implats on the exact cause of the collision, including whether signalling systems were operational, whether both locomotives were under proper control and what communication took place in the moments leading up to the incident.
In response to questions from Mining Weekly, Implats has confirmed the fatal injury.
It says the incident is being investigated and that Implats is offering support the colleague’s family.
