ASX-listed Alurion Resources has started with infill drilling and bulk sample trenching at the Amargosa bauxite/gallium project, in Brazil, marking the transition from established resource scale to field-based development programmes for the company.

The infill drilling and bulk sample trenching aims to enhance the measured and indicated resources for a direct-ship-bauxite prefeasibility study (PFS), comprising 203 auger holes for 2 436 m, 20 diamond twin holes for 800 m and up to 16 bulk sample trenches.

The company is targeting Amargosa's Central District area first as the development anchor for the entire project, given that Central hosts the largest share of Amargosa's direct-ship-bauxite and beneficiable bauxite mineral resources.

Alurion points out that the bulk sample programme will sample the full bauxite profile across both the Central and North Districts and support an integrated metallurgical and product-specification testwork programme.

The company mentions it will assess the potential for higher bauxite processing yields as well as the recovery of co-products such as ilmenite, zircon and monazite.

Meanwhile, Alurion confirms that an independent road logistics study is nearing completion, which will strengthen the logistics parameters and evaluate the scalability of export configurations for the PFS.

Alurion CEO Maurício Noronha says the timing of the project is important, since China is importing bauxite at a pace materially ahead of earlier forecasts while relying on Guinea for four of every five imported bauxite tonnes.

"Amargosa offers a strategic, large-scale Atlantic-basin bauxite project, and the early commercial engagement with the industry since Alurion's spinout [from Brazilian Rare Earths] is positive. Each workstream is designed to strengthen the PFS targeted for mid-2027," Noronha concludes.
