Agricultural automation and AI solutions platform Farmflex, which has been shortlisted as a nominee for the 2026 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, is “revolutionising” the way in which smallholder farmers conduct farming practices and business processes.

Created by farming solutions company Lema Agriventures, Farmflex’s digital platform, equipped with AI, Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors and analytics solutions, helps farmers improve productivity, resilience and profitability by affording them access to and use of real-time information, practical recommendations and automated support, says Lema Agriventures CEO Mochesane Mpali.

The Farmflex platform allows farmers to make informed, data-led decisions regarding their operations, eliminating risky guesswork, thereby safeguarding crops, reducing the likelihood of food insecurity and facilitating increased produce sales.

The platform addresses the ongoing challenges facing the agricultural industry, including climate change, resource scarcity and rising production costs.

“Over time, I saw how yields have declined and how many smallholder farmers were no longer producing enough to feed their families, let alone generate surplus to sell. As a software engineer, I saw an opportunity to apply technology to that challenge, [which] led to the creation of Farmflex,” says Mpali.

He notes that farmers receive alerts from the Farmflex platform – through WhatsApp or SMS – that inform them of crop health, nutrient levels, soil moisture and temperature.

Additionally, the Farmflex platform integrates AI to analyse historical yields and market trends to recommend which crops are best for a specific location and provide insight into planting and harvesting seasons.

“This helps farmers avoid planting the wrong crops in the wrong conditions, reduces wasted input such as seed, fertiliser and water, and improves the chances of stronger yields and better market returns,” he explains.

Further, the Farmflex solution can assist farmers in forecasting the risks of drought and disease outbreaks, as well as support automated processes, such as irrigation scheduling and nutrient application, which reduces labour pressure, improves consistency and allows farmers to optimise existing resources.

Lema Agriventures also offers smallholder farmers a turnkey solution, including the design and installation of hydroponic and aquaponic systems; seed, nutrients and equipment supply; and installation of IoT sensors for real-time monitoring.

“A key part of the model is implementation support. [We do] not simply hand over the technology, [we] work with the client by conducting on-site assessments, while providing installation, system configuration and training services . . . in practical terms, we offer an integrated, ready-to-use farming solution that combines infrastructure, inputs and smart technology in one package,” says Mpali.

E-Commerce Solution

The Farmflex platform empowers small- scale farmers to access premium or formal markets through an e-commerce platform that allows them to sell to buyers outside of their immediate local areas, including larger buyers and foreign or export markets, on a consistent basis.

“The platform helps by connecting farmers more directly to a wider network of buyers, including retailers, restaurants and agroprocessors. Instead of relying only on informal markets or intermediaries, farmers can use a digital marketplace to list produce, access pricing insights, and reach markets that may otherwise be out of reach,” he adds.

Small-scale farmers will also be able to use the platform to aggregate supply across multiple farms, allowing smaller producers to meet large orders and participate in markets that typically exclude them.

Mpali adds that the e-commerce platform allows farmers to reduce post-harvest losses by aligning production more closely with market demand. This will ensure that farmers shorten the time between harvest and sale, enabling more produce to be sold in good condition, well before it spoils.

Farmflex is a smart farming solution for the African agricultural industry, contributing to economic development and the long-term viability of farming on the continent.

“Farmflex turns farm data into clear, usable guidance. Farmers can make [evidenced-based] decisions about planting, harvesting and resource allocation . . . our focus is on strengthening and improving Farmflex and making sure the platform is robust, reliable and genuinely useful to farmers,” he concludes.
