Adnoc to add EV charging to Shell stations
Adnoc Distribution aims to run the roughly 580 Shell service stations it is taking over in South Africa as “hubs and destinations” with a number of added value propositions, including electric vehicle (EV) charging points, says CEO Bader Al Lamki.
Shell South Africa Holdings announced in July that it was selling its equity interest in Shell Downstream South Africa to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company for Distribution (Adnoc Distribution).
The transaction is expected to be completed next year, subject to regulatory approvals.
Upon completion, the Shell brand will remain in South Africa through brand licensing agreements.
Speaking at the African Energy Week held in Cape Town earlier this month, Al Lamki said Adnoc Distribution’s first goal upon taking ownership of the stations would be to make sure that they continued operating without any interruption.
Following this, the company would begin to steadily inject its own DNA into the service chain, by enhancing the shopping offers and “monetising every square metre” through services such as car washes and other car-care services, liquefied petroleum gas sales, and “definitely” EV-related services.
Al Lamki added that the 54-year-old Adnoc intended to be a “long-term player” in South Africa and wanted to ensure that it could fulfil the demands of its local customers.
