Aclara nears completion of Penco Module permitting process
TSX-listed Aclara Resources has entered the last stage of the permitting process for its Penco Module project, in Chile.
The company submitted the final addendum for its environmental-impact assessment (EIA) on the project on April 1.
The clean-technology mining company aspires to build a sustainable rare earths supply chain outside of China, with the Penco Module poised to produce heavy rare elements that are required for electric vehicles, wind energy and industrial technologies.
The final addendum for the EIA addresses the last round of technical and environmental observations made by the company and includes updated engineering designs and environmental studies. Particularly, it adds adaptive measures following recent wildfires in the project area.
The Penco Module remains a key project that will produce significant quantities of heavy rare earths, which are critical to enabling a more diversified and cleaner global supply chain for these scarce elements, says Aclara executive VP José Palma.
He affirms the company is advancing a project that upholds the highest environmental standards and has the potential to deliver long-term value for the Biobío region and Chile.
Penco Module is expected to produce 811 t/y of rare earth oxides.
The company earlier in March inaugurated its rare earth separation pilot plant in Blacksburg, Virginia. The facility represents a milestone in Aclara’s strategy to establish a vertically integrated rare earths supply chain in the western hemisphere and support the development of an industrial-scale separation facility in Louisiana.
The plant is validating and optimising Aclara’s proprietary rare earths separation technology using high-purity mixed rare earth carbonates produced from the company’s ionic clay deposits in Brazil and Chile.
