The MD600Z range of armoured direct current (DC) motors – engineered as direct, drop-in replacements for legacy MD600 machines still operating in steel mills, metal forming lines and crane applications – has been introduced by industrial motor and drive technology company Wolong Electric America.

The MD600Z combines the “proven electrical design” of the original MD600 series with modern MD800 mechanical and thermal enhancements to improve reliability and maintainability while preserving the speed, torque and inertia characteristics required in multi-motor systems.

US plants running large fleets of MD600 motors from the 1940s through the late 1970s often hesitate to upgrade to MD800 designs because the different speed and inertia profiles can disrupt systems where many motors are mechanically coupled and powered from the same circuit.

The MD600Z solves this issue by retaining the original MD600 armature and field coil designs, so it remains electrically interchangeable with legacy MD600 units while offering a reinforced, modernised platform for mill-duty service.

Performance Data and Features

At the core of the MD600Z is a fabricated steel reinforced “Z” vintage frame, building on MD mill-duty experience in heavy mining and steel applications. The split-frame construction, increased clamping, welded lifting lugs and robust bearing support handle high shock, vibration and intermittent loading typical of roll tables, metal forming equipment and overhead cranes.

These frame features draw on Z vintage designs originally developed for shovel crowd and rotary blast-hole drill drives, proven over decades in severe environments.

The MD600Z incorporates the standard MD800 feature set, delivering major gains in thermal performance, reliability and serviceability compared with original MD600 frames. Standard features include tape-reinforced encapsulated construction coils in both main and commutating fields, a Class H insulation system with 75 °C temperature rise, and interlocking, glass-banded commutator construction with Viton sealing for durability and contamination resistance. Tungsten-inert-gas-welded riser connections, and the split frame design further strengthen the motor and ease access for inspection and maintenance.

Mechanical enhancements support continuous heavy-duty operation in steel and crane environments. Single-width cylindrical roller bearings provide high intermittent and impact thrust capacity, while cartridge-type bearing assemblies replace older complex frame head castings to simplify bearing replacement and improve alignment.

Its labyrinth seals, welded lifting lugs, and an extra severe-duty, or XSD, motor blower improve protection against contaminants, support higher thermal loading and help extend service intervals.

To ensure seamless integration, the MD600Z is both electrically and mechanically interchangeable with original MD600 to support direct mechanical replacement without compromising acceleration or dynamic behaviour.
