Eurasian Resources ferroalloy subsidiary awarded environmental accolade
A subsidiary of Luxembourg-based Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), Transnational Company Kazchrome Joint Stock Company (Kazchrome), has been awarded an international Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its high-carbon ferrochrome.
Kazchromeis one of the world’s largest ferroalloys producers is based in Kazakhstan.
High-carbon ferrochrome is a crucial ferroalloy used primarily in stainless steel production, containing between 4% and 9% carbon, between 60% and 70% chromium and between 1% and 3% silicon.
It enhances hardness and corrosion resistance in steel.
The EPD certification confirms that ERG’s products meet international environmental standards and provides transparent disclosure of their environmental impact.
Kazchrome itself initiated the environmental-impact evaluation, engaging SGS, the world’s leading provider of inspection, certification and environmental assessment services, to conduct the study.
Subsequently, independent experts from the International EPD system carried out a comprehensive lifecycle assessment of Kazchrome’s high-carbon ferrochrome.
The assessment took into account key environmental factors such as mining, transportation and processing of raw materials, water and energy consumption, as well as the proportion of primary and recycled materials used.
The company’s advanced processing, recovery, and recycling technologies enable more sustainable use of natural resources, reducing reliance on primary materials, lowering the carbon footprint, and minimizing waste sent to tailings storage facilities.
“We proactively initiated the EPD process to confirm that our products meet international environmental standards. This strengthens our position in global markets and supports sustainable development in our host regions, ensuring stable operation, jobs, and confidence for our people,” says Kazchrome general director Sergey Prokopyev.
He adds that this reflects ERG’s commitment to sustainability and reinforces the global competitiveness of products made in Kazakhstan.
